Florence Fashion Week: Pitti Immagine No 83 8 – 11 January 2013
A highlight of the Fashion international showcase, Florence’s Pitti Immagine Fashion Week is the key biannual appointment for designers, traders, cool-hunters, buyers and creative people alike. Florence’s Fashion Week celebrates its 83rd Edition of Pitti Men from January 8 – 11 2013 with the new Mens Collection as well as the 11th edition of Womens Precollection.
Pitti Men attracts over 30,000 visitors each season, besides the large audiences attending the exclusive programme of cultural events, ranging from new boutique openings, products launches and arts shows. Pitti Immagine organises some of the world’s must-see fashion and cultural events: contemporary creative languages, visual arts, design, architecture, cinema, photography, advertising and music shows provide counterpoint to the high-end quality clothing and textile fairs and catwalks by broadening the investigation on the inspirational role of creative enquiry that fashion bears to the arts.
Every year a new theme to the events is launched: this edition’s leitmotif is “Pitti BookwearsMania“, referring to the relation between the world of fashion and the passion for reading, as well as to the endless source of inspiration that books, their characters and their clothes represent to the creation of the new collections.
The winter Pitti Immagine is a celebration of books, either paper or digital: giant settings, installations and events inspired by books will lead the visitor throughout the fair, while a huge statement installation by architect Oliviero Baldini will tower in the main piazza of the 15th century Fortezza da Basso. The thousands of buyers and press will be welcomed by a huge skateboard made of books, suggesting the idea that reading is an experience at the same time exciting and daring, as well as by facades of buildings covered with books, whose material manifestations serve as a hint to create images.
Buyers and visitors will be able to share data and implement the BookswearMania project through the live interaction with the dedicated apps.
January 2011 edition, one of my favourites in the last few years, had a very intriguing theme – Pitti City – a visual metaphor of the city as the perfect portrayal of contemporary fashions and Trends. Colourful, ironic, three-dimensional pop-up versions of the logos of the Fair’s 14 sections, symbolizing the variety of the featured styles, were on display in the main courtyard of the Fortezza da Basso’s exhibition space.
