Natalia Goncharova retrospective opening @Palazzo Strozzi in Florence September 28 2019

The much-awaited show “Natalia Goncharova: A Woman of the Avant-Garde with Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso” will open at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence on September 28, presenting a major retrospective of one the leading female artists of the 20th century. Her multifaceted artistic practice spanned painting, costume and set design, performance, illustration and fashion design, influencing the artistic movements of the time and pioneering techniques and experimental approaches to art and design.

The show features some 130 artworks describing a narrative from the artist’s early years in Russia, her rising to success in 1913 thanks to her first major retrospective in Moscow, through to her life in Paris  and the contacts with leading artistic movements such as futurism and cubism.

As Strozzi’s curator Ludovica Sebregondi described in her presentation, Goncharova is mainly know to the Italian audiences for her work to Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes as set and costume designer between 1914 and 1929. Her work seems suspended between passion, highlighted by the bright colours of the set up, and composure.
